Fighting cellulite - Tips to adopt

by Siham Picart

Cellulite usually appears on the thighs and buttocks, but can also occur in other areas such as the arms, calves or stomach.

Studies show that cellulite affects between 80 and 90% of women. Cellulite is also known as orange peel skin, due to its texture.

Cellulite can affect both men and women, but it is more common in women, due to the different distributions of fat, muscle, and connective tissue.

There are many causes of cellulite:

Hormonal factors and age

Hormones likely play a significant role in the development of cellulite. Estrogen, insulin, norepinephrine, thyroid hormones, and prolactin are all involved in the cellulite production process.

As menopause approaches, adipocytes also enlarge as estrogen levels decline.

These factors combine to make fat deposits more visible, and collagen breakdown worsens the dimpled effect. Age also makes skin less elastic, thinner, and more prone to sagging.

Genetic factors

Genetic factors can influence a person's metabolic rate, the distribution of fat under the skin, ethnicity, and circulatory problems. These factors can increase the risk of developing cellulite.

Food

People who eat too much fat, carbohydrates, salt and too little fiber, and who do not drink enough water are likely to have a greater amount of cellulite.

It may also be more common in smokers, people who do not exercise, and those who sit or stand in the same position for long periods of time.

Wearing tight underwear can restrict blood circulation, which can contribute to the formation of cellulite.

Cellulite is more common in people who are overweight, but thin and athletic people can also have it. It is more likely to occur after the age of 25, but it can also affect younger people, including teenagers.

A healthy and balanced diet, quitting smoking, and an active lifestyle, including certain sports such as swimming and cycling, can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Several treatments can be recommended to treat cellulite.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has reviewed a number of techniques that may reduce the appearance of cellulite, such as ultrasound, radiofrequency, laser, etc.
These technologies deliver proven and rapid results. A complete program typically requires 6 sessions on average.
It is recommended to consult a weight loss expert to carry out a personalized assessment and prescribe a suitable and tailored program.
